{"id":3502,"date":"2024-02-15T07:03:01","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T14:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialgravityfamilyofficeservices.com\/love\/uncategorized\/four-questions-your-mutual-fund-salesperson-does-not-want-you-to-ask\/"},"modified":"2024-02-15T07:06:14","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T14:06:14","slug":"four-questions-your-mutual-fund-salesperson-does-not-want-you-to-ask","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialgravityfamilyofficeservices.com\/love\/family-office\/four-questions-your-mutual-fund-salesperson-does-not-want-you-to-ask\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Questions Your Mutual Fund Salesperson Does Not Want You to Ask"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Question #1<\/h2>\n<p>At the end of 2022, The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/02\/business\/stock-market-index-funds.html\">published an article<\/a> that showed that \u201cNo actively managed stock or bond funds outperformed the market convincingly and regularly over the last five years.\u201d So my question is: Why would I want to buy a mutual fund when index funds, which by definition always provide market returns, are so much cheaper?<\/p>\n<p>The answer you get may include: something about Morningstar star ratings\u2026something about the great skill and reputation of the fund manager or managers..there is some trend or other that manager really understands&#8230;.you get breakpoints for investing more!<\/p>\n<p>The answer you want: \u201cThere is nothing a mutual fund can do for you that an ETF can\u2019t do for less money, more tax efficiency, less non-systematic risk, or more transparency. So I have come to realize that we should carefully transfer your assets from mutual funds to ETFs, and I\u2019m personally changing from a commission salesperson to a fiduciary advisor.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Question #2<\/h2>\n<p>According to Investopedia, a good expense ratio for a mutual fund is one-half to three-quarters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/ask\/answers\/032715\/when-expense-ratio-considered-high-and-when-it-considered-low.asp#:~:text=A%20number%20of%20factors%20determine,than%201.5%25%20is%20considered%20high\">one percent<\/a>. But I know there are high-quality ETFs from global firms whose expense ratios are one-twentieth of one percent. What exactly does the mutual fund do for me to earn a fee that\u2019s more than 10 times higher?<\/p>\n<p>The answer you get may include: \u201cIt\u2019s not what you spend, it\u2019s what you make\u2026these managers are super-primo experts\u2026you get what you pay for\u2026sixty-five basis points is a deal for this kind of pedigree\u2026would I ever steer you wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer you want: \u201cAmericans have invested over $20 trillion into mutual funds, which means that they send hundreds of billions of dollars to these fund complexes every year. You could think of it as the largest transfer of wealth in world history\u2014from American families to mutual fund firms. Yet credible consulting firms have demonstrated that the average American fund investor badly underperforms the market indexes. Because I care about you and your family, I\u2019m recommending you move to an ETF strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Question #3<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m told that brokers like you, who sell mutual funds, need to make sure that the funds they recommend meet something called \u201cthe suitability standard.\u201d Can you explain to me how that differs from the fiduciary standard?<\/p>\n<p>The answer you get may include: \u201cI would never steer you wrong!&#8230;your family means the world to me\u2026we talked about how you wanted to save for retirement, right?&#8230;I only recommend 4-star or higher funds\u2026I always think of you first before I sell you anything\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer you want: \u201cI love an educated client, and I\u2019m glad you\u2019ve asked me about this. My firm sells things for commissions under certain circumstances, but we also provide advice for a fee. I recommend you switch to a fee-based relationship, where my only concern, the only basis of any recommendation I would make, is your family\u2019s best interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Question #4<\/h2>\n<p>Can you tell me what the maximum downside risk of my mutual funds is? If we had another 2007 type of market, how much might I lose in my mutual fund portfolio?<\/p>\n<p>The answer you get may include: \u201cOur chief investment officer is forecasting a robust election year market\u2026The managers we recommend are really nimble\u2026the cash the manager keeps on hand should give you some protection\u2026our guy was only down 45% in 2007\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer you want: \u201cThe simple truth is we just cannot know what a mutual fund manager is doing, except four times a year, and then only for a moment in time that may no longer be operative. Mutual funds are opaque by law, and they commingle tax liabilities with all owners of the fund, and you probably have never read the prospectus.
